Astrolabe Wines was established by a group of friends in 1996. Astrolabe’s vineyard sits in the heart of the spectacular Waihopai Valley – the heart of Marlborough wine country. With these superb Marlborough grapes, harvested from their co-owned 90 acre vineyard and other select local vineyards, winemaker Simon Waghorn crafts wines of exceptional quality.
The name ‘Astrolabe’ was chosen by Simon because he liked the historic connection with Marlborough and the connotations of exploration and adventure. ’L’Astrolabe’ was the mighty ship sailed by French explorer Dumont D’Urville through the Marlborough Sounds in the early 19th century. The ship itself took its name from a navigational instrument used to discover the position of the stars. Seeking the stars seemed appropriate: Astrolabe’s ’A’ motif is an abstraction of the instrument.
Tasting Note: Powerful gooseberry, greengage, capsicum, passionfruit and lime peel aromas. Medium to full-bodied with strong gooseberry, passionfruit and currant flavours, a hint of freshly cut red pepper, and a refreshingly smooth lingering finish.
