Owned and managed by Clive Paton, his sister Alison, his wife Phyll and winemaker Oliver Masters, Ata Rangi was an unremarkable, barren five hectare paddock when Clive bought it in 1980. As one of a handful of winemaking pioneers in Martinborough, then a forgotten rural settlement, he was drawn to the area because of three key features: localised, free-draining shingle terrace some 20 metres deep; the lowest rainfall records in the North Island; and the proximity to Wellington. Clive knew the land well from farming there in the past.
Tasting Note: Bright ruby in colour with lovely ripe, black cherry fruit perfumes on the nose, following through to plummy, cherry and chocolate characters on the palate. Fresh, young vibrant fruit is supported by supple, youthful tannins and a welcome acidity.
