    theGarance Doré interview

Harriet Hawksworth caught up with recent CDFA winner, blogger, illustrator, photographer and one half of fashion's hottest power couple Garance Doré to celebrate the launch of of her truly international collaboration with Parisian label Equipment.

From LA and Dallas to Paris and Sydney, travel is a big part of your life. Which country do you feel is the most stylish?

I like to get away from the usual ‘fashion capital’ type places. I recently visited Morocco and was hugely inspired by the colour and landscapes. I love the freedom of Australia, but Brazil is probably my favourite place at the moment; the fashion is amazing and it’s really going through this massive globalization. Also the people are so body-centric, the atmosphere of the place is astonishing!

What’s the first thing you put in your suitcase when you pack?

First of all, I must have all of my geeky things – my books, my iPad, my cameras and all of my gadgets. Fashion-wise, I need to know what I will be doing so I plan around that. I’m really obsessed with white jeans at the moment; they’re just a bit chicer than blue jeans. I pack two or three pairs so they don’t get dirty and I think if you have a shirt, some white jeans and a tailored men’s blazer, you’ll be prepared for anything. I always pack a swimsuit too, as you never know when you’ll fit in a swim at the hotel pool.

Blogging is actually a really mental way to live. It invades every aspect of your life, even when you’re not working, you’re working.

You say that, “the shows are where I find the inspirations for my blog”. What has been your most memorable fashion week moment to date?

When Jil Sander returned to her label for the Spring Summer 2013 catwalk show [after an eight-year hiatus from her eponymous brand] the love in the room was amazing. People were really emotional.

Maintaining a successful website requires a great deal of motivation. How do you feel you have achieved such a huge following, and what advice would you give to someone launching a blog?

Keep it personal, keep it intimate, you have a chance to reach out to people globally so let them into your life. You need to have an original voice and you need to talk about things you are passionate about, and things that come naturally. I loved chatting with friends, illustration and photography, so I decided to write conversationally and mix illustration and photos. My advice is, take all the things you love and make something unique.

You won the 2012 Council of Fashion Designers of America Media award. The prize has only just been opened up to bloggers - what does this say about how the industry is changing?

Winning that award with Scott [boyfriend and man behind the über-successful Sartorialist blog] was an incredible moment. It’s a really exciting time to do what we do. It feels like being at the heart of a storm, everything is changing. Fashion used to be quite a closed world, now it is becoming increasingly democratic, it’s evolving and I love that.

You’ve been working on a collaboration with Equipment (which includes Caroline Issa and Taylor Tomasi Hill) – why did you choose these women specifically to feature in the campaign?

I chose them because they are my friends! It was a dream project really, I just got my most stylish friends together and let them style the clothes exactly how they would wear them. We all love Equipment shirts, so we got together, dressed up and had lunch – such fun!

What’s it like working in the same industry as your partner, Scott Schuman who runs

It feels like the most natural thing in the world. Blogging is actually a really mental way to live. It invades every aspect of your life, it’s personal and even when you’re not working, you’re working. So you need to be with someone who understands that. We both love what we do and we are old enough to be completely supportive. There’s no jealousy, we edit each other’s work, we are proud of each other and we inspire each other.

Your personal style icon is Katherine Hepburn. Who do you feel is the style icon of tomorrow?

I am a big fan of Diane Kruger. She just looks so utterly effortless, but there’s a story there. It’s not fashion for fashion’s sake, you feel like she genuinely loves clothes. I’ve heard that she styles herself and does all her own hair and make-up. Not that I’ve got anything against using stylists, but her look just feels so genuine.

Who would you love to work with?

I would love to work with Woody Allen, I don’t know what we’d do but it would be up to him – I’ll do whatever he likes! I love watching people work, so I’d be happy to just watch him. I’m very interested in film.

Do you have a ‘life plan’?

I think it’s hard to go places without vision, so I am trying to think about the things I want to accomplish and how I will do that. But in terms of a huge master plan, no I don’t have one.

Drawing or photography: you can only do one for the rest of your life. Which do you choose?

That’s so easy – photography. Being an illustrator is one of the most solitary jobs, and I am such a social person. Photography allows me to interact with people and be creative, so it’s perfect.

Trainer buffs listen up. There’s a new breed on the market. Haute hi-tops from the likes of Marc Jacobs, YSL and Alexander McQueen for Puma are filling our e-shelves and tipping the footwear scale. Not to be worn with your standard T-shirt and jeans, these thoroughbreds require a more suave ensemble. Daniel Craig has it nailed with his shirt, tie and cardi combo. Airport Security, otherwise known as the 100ml challenge, will flummox even the most prepared beauty addicts. When you’re in it for the long haul, every inch of that transparent plastic bag needs to be considered.

Eight hours of air con will suck the life out of any complexion, so intense hydration is essential for radiant landing. Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask (1) can be applied thinly and left to soak in to the skin for hours (without giving me a scary clay face), and Kiehl’s’ Rosa Artica Eye Cream (2) is perfect for patting on to my tired peepers.

Preparation for Arrivals begins at 39,000 ft. A deft spritz of a reviving formula like Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Tonic (3) awakens and refreshes, and nothing beats Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit (4) for hiding the dark circles of a sleepless night. I always carry a 30ml bottle of fragrance (5,YSL, Manifesto ), and eyeliner (6,Dolce & Gabbana, Intense ) to create my favourite flicks. Top tip- never leave the country without a Clinique Chubby Stick (7)- it's colour and moisture in one.

This little belt of mine, I’m going to let it shine

    Love this

After seasons spent usurped by peplums and tunics, the belt is back and ready to make a statement. And it doesn’t get more out-there than Ralph Lauren Black Label’s Alligator Belt complete with eye-watering sparkle.

Upgrade your outerwear by cinching in Winter coats, or forgo jewels in favour of a belted LBD for evening.

To truly give this belt the attention it deserves, we suggest an all-black ensemble consisting of a cigarette pant, fine knit cashmere polo and a crop jacket. Keep shoes slick and streamlined (try a Casadei pump) matching accessories died with the ‘80s.
