- Tasting Note:
From some of the highest altitude vineyards in Chianti Classico, organic and low-yielding Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Pugnitello grapes were handpicked and taken to the traditional winery. The juice was allowed to ferment using natural yeasts in cement tanks, then aged in large oak casks for 18 months, followed by 12 months in bottle. The resultant wine is densely concentrated and best characterised by dark cherry, damson and mulberry fruits. The palate has expansive richness of texture, followed by succulent, refreshing acidity underlined by fine, grainy tannin.

Hailed as one of Tuscany’s rising stars, La Porta di Vertine was founded in 2006, when Dan and Ellen Lugosch acquired a near-perfect amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in Vertine, a tiny hamlet of Chianti Classico. The owners have a strong commitment to fine wine production and exploring the best sites for reflecting the complexity of the Sangiovese grape. Together with winemaker Giacomo Mastretta and agronomist Dr Ruggero Mazzili the estate’s vineyards have been organically converted with the philosophy of ‘less is more’. In addition, Giulio Gambelli, Sangiovese’s legendary advocate, acts as La Porta di Vertine’s oenological consultant. Well and truly in good hands, this family estate has all the credentials for producing wines of the highest echelon.
