Overview

Tasting Note:
Bright golden in colour, the Canadian Club Classic has a fresh and soft aroma with an almond nuttiness and a hint of spice and sweet, fresh oak. Light bodied and exceptionally smooth with a spicy, zesty character, this spirit is lifted by hints of wood and vanilla. The finish is clean and dry with a lingering oaky character.

he story of Canadian Club Whisky began with Hiram Walker, who made his fortune as a grocer and grain merchant in Detroit in the mid 1800s. By 1856 he had enough capital to invest and a desire to go into milling and distilling. However, the unstable Temperance laws in the United States at the time – a precursor to Prohibition – encouraged him to look across the Detroit River to Canada as a suitable place to set up his business. Canada offered a steady supply of quality grains, land, materials and labour – cheaper than he could find at home – and a more tolerant attitude towards alcohol. With this in mind, Mr Walker soon purchased a 468-acre tract of land and built a mill and distillery, and, by 1858, he was selling feed, flour and whisky.

He developed such a uniquely smooth whisky that it quickly became popular in Gentlemen’s Clubs throughout the US and Canada – hence its name ‘Club Whisky’. Due to this popularity, American distillers petitioned Walker to add the word ‘Canada’ to the name to make a clear distinction from competing American whiskies. The name was changed to ‘Canadian Club’, and the legend began. Canadian Club’s unique distillation method ensures only the most delicate flavours are retained, which produces a spirit of unrivalled lightness and smoothness. Canadian Club is double distilled to remove any harsh alcohols, using a combination of both pot and column stills, which contributes to a light taste profile. In addition, it contains a high percentage of rye grain, along with corn, malted rye and barley, and is blended before ageing in white oak barrels. Canadian Club tends to be sweeter and less challenging than Scotch, and smoother than Bourbon, making it uniquely accessible to both new consumers as well as more sophisticated connoisseurs.
