The estate is situated in the heart of the St-Émilion appellation and originates from a small walled vineyard which was planted around the Church of St. Martin in the 18th century. In 1760 Jacques Kanon, the likely founder of the name Château Canon, purchased this small 13-hectare vineyard and expanded the holdings to include neighbouring vineyards and a new manor house. The estate changed hands through several owners over the next few generations, before the Fournier family took over the reins in 1919, invested quite considerably in the estate and eventually sold it to Chanel in 1996. Château Canon now includes 22 hectares of southwest-facing vineyards, planted on limestone terraces, which reach a lofty height (for Bordeaux) of 87 metres above sea level. The estate produces a grand vin Château Canon and a second wine by the name of Clos Canon – both have long been highly appraised by critics and are well worth seeking out.
