Overview

Tasting Note:
An intense flavour, the wine exudes an immediate barrel-ferment propulsion –sweet and candied with a peaty, iodine, green olive base. Beneath is a barely-concealed swirl of vegemite and concentrated salt-paste laced with paprika, oregano flower and thyme. A slurry of cocoa powder, a scented waft of black pudding and a splash of sea-spray temporarily balance this aromatic equation.

On the palate the wine is dense with a paste-like texture and weight. A balsamic lift is unleashed making way for tannins which focus on the roof of the mouth, ladenwith an additional film of dark chocolate. A mix of quince and sesame-paste laden with basted meats and saturated stewed plum, boysenberry and blueberry, the fruity flavour is aromatic and tightly bound.

Penfolds is one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic wineries, with a history and heritage that reflects the country’s journey from colonial settlement to the modern era. The company has played a pivotal role in the evolution of winemaking in Australia, and across the world, since it was founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson and Mary Penfold. After purchasing the ‘delightfully situated and truly valuable estate’ at Magill on the slopes of the Adelaide Hills, they planted a vineyard and established a medical surgery in the newly built stone cottage, ‘The Grange’. Already wine was considered by colonial practitioners as a healthy drink. Penfolds tonic wines became so popular that a thriving wine business was soon established. Today, Penfolds wines evoke an ageless generosity of spirit, craftsmanship and the beauty of the Australian landscape.
