Overview

Tasting Note:
The additional oak influence creates a soft sweetness and velvety feel when first tasted. Then the intense peatiness, so unique to Laphroaig, comes bursting through. The finish is very long and alternates between the sweetness and the peat.

This whisky’s name takes its inspiration from the small casks often used for Scotch whisky during the 19th century, which provide greater contact with the wood and intensify the maturation process. This unique dram was created by transferring partly matured Laphroaig from larger style barrels into the quarter casks for further maturation. For greater authenticity, Laphroaig simply barrier-filtered the whisky – the method used in those far-off days – and bottled at a higher alcoholic strength.

The Irish had clearly been distilling illegally on Islay for many years, though it was never discussed. This was not only made apparent by the locals who easily picked up the skills of the previous owners when they left, but by the small stills on local farms that were seen but never talked about. Records do show, however, that the Johnstons started farming there around 1800 and soon after messers Charles and Willie Doig were conveniently asked to do some ‘work on a distillery’ at Laphroaig.

By 1815 the taxman was getting suspicious and Johnston & Johnston had to become officially established or face the consequences – and so the legend of Laphroaig begins. Over the millennia Islay’s geography has shaped the communities that live and work on the island. They are a strong and uncompromising people; the very qualities you can taste in every bottle of Laphroaig whisky. These are truly unforgettable whiskies, challenging yet rewarding with unmistakable peat-smoke flavours.
