Do I need a primer?

Foundation, concealer, highlighter, powder, blush…the standard make-up regime already contains a considerable number of complexion perfectors, so it’s little wonder that so many of us have questioned the need for primer. Designed to be used before foundation, primers are now widely available, but is this beauty product a must-have essential or needless add-on?

“I wouldn’t always say a primer is necessary,” says Bobbi Brown Pro Artist, Hannah Martin, “but, it is important to prepare your skin; you can have the best foundation on the market, but if you haven’t prepared your skin properly underneath, you won’t get optimum effects.”

All make-up regimes should begin with a thorough cleanse of the skin, and an appropriate moisturiser for your skin type. If your complexion veers on the oily side, choose a lightweight, water-based formula that will balance and mattify. Alternatively, those with drier skin should ensure skin is hydrated before make-up application. This standard, yet considered, approach to your skincare regime can be preparation enough for make-up application, however don’t dismiss primers completely…
