5 Minutes With Deborah Lippmann
We caught up with manicurist to the stars, Deborah Lippmann, about the top nail shades of AW14, her favourite nail colours and how to keep hands in tip-top condition throughout the season.
What are the key nail trends for the season?
Soft golds are pretty. It’s also interesting that pink is popular this autumn; I’ve seen a lot of pink in the collections. In my AW14 collection, we have ‘Harlem Nocturne’ which is a purple shade that is beautiful for autumn. I also like a grey for this season, like my colour ‘Take The ‘A’ Train’; for this, I was inspired by the subway.
What nail shapes are on-trend for this season?
Shapes are still almond this season, with a little bit of length so that they still look feminine.
What was the inspiration behind your AW14 collection?
My Fall collection was inspired by New York and the Art Deco period; a combination of trying to make it modern, especially with the grey colour and the Deco, super-luxe chrome. Recently, we’ve been so crazy with glitter and nail art; women are still interested in texture and things that are slightly new, so I wanted to keep the collection looking luxurious but also brought it back a notch.
Do you have any favourite shades in your collection?
I’ve just put on a colour called ‘Love Will Leave A Mark’, that is from my 15th Anniversary Music Box. All the names of the colours are song titles; I wrote and sang the song that is playing when you open the box. One of my favourites is a dark, rich berry shade, which is really nice for Fall but can also be a year-round colour.
Do you have any top tips for keeping nails in good condition on-the-go?
I think it’s really important to give yourself a manicure once a week - it’s key. If you do that weekly, then everything else becomes easier. When it stretches out to two and a half weeks, it’s hard to make them look good in-between. I think my Smooth Operator nail buffer is a quick fix for when you don’t have time for a manicure – it brings instant happiness. Moisturising is also key to having beautiful hands. If you have a nail polish on and you know you won’t be getting a manicure for a while, apply a top coat every two to three days. Always cap the tip of your nail with polish and it will last a lot longer.
