Perfect Your Smoky Eye For Autumn

The smoky eye is a versatile make-up look for any woman’s beauty repertoire, but it’s not always easy to create yourself. We caught up with Bobbi Brown Pro Artist, Hannah Martin, for tips and tricks on how to master the smoky look.

Why is the smoky eye so popular?
It is so synonymous with a sexy, alluring make-up up look. Whether you have got hazel brown eyes, or crystal blue eyes, framing all the way round with a dark dusty hue makes the pupil really pop and helps the eye stand out. I think generally, women feel more confident with the smoky look.

Can you wear the smoky eye by day?
I think you can; often it just needs to be slightly pared down. I love to use our Long-wear Cream Shadow in Cement with black eyeliner and a smudge of dark eyeshadow for a pretty delicate day smoky eye. Just add more eyeshadow to create a deeper look for evening.

What’s the easiest way of creating a quick smoky eye?
Prep your lid with Long-wear Eye Base, then apply a single muted shadow all over the lid. Apply Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner at the lash line with the Ultra Fine Liner Brush for precision. Finally smudge out the liner with Bobbi’s Smoky Eyeliner Brush.

Can you wear lipstick with a smoky eye?
I think if you’re playing up the eyes, stick to a more neutral lip. In the early 2000’s it was all about gloss with a smoky eye, but now there is a migration towards more matte, nude lip colour, which gives a slightly more modern take on the look. My favourite lipstick to pair with a smoky eye is Creamy Matte Lip Color in Nude, it’ll take out all natural redness of your lips and tone them down to a soft beigey pink. Try finger pressing it on, so it doesn’t look too made-up.

What is the one eye brush we all should own?
I love the Angle Eye Shadow Brush, because its relatively firm so you can use to press in your highlight colour under the brow bone, and also use it to sweep shadow over the entire lid. If you press the tip into a very dark colour, you can then push it into the lash line for a soft, defined eyeliner look.
