The Ultimate Concealer Guide
For most women, concealer is a make-up bag staple. Capable of covering up a multitude of imperfections, the best concealers are those that are undetectable on the skin, but with so many different formulas on the market, can you be sure that you’re getting the most out of your product? We asked top make-up artists for their tips on concealing three of the biggest complexion concerns: under-eye shadows, blemishes and discolouration.
Best for: under-eye shadows
“If you struggle with under-eye shadows, it's important that you invest in a good eye cream that will help keep the skin around the eye plump and hydrated,” advises Bobbi Brown Pro Artist, Hannah Martin. Before you begin your concealer, try applying a colour-correcting product like Bobbi Brown Corrector, “if the shadow is pinky/purple then use a pink corrector; if the shadow is more brown then try a peach tone corrector,” says Hannah.
Darren Buswell, By Terry National Artist and Educator recommends to “Erase and brighten, not lighten!” when it comes to concealer. Use a highlighting pen like Touch Expert Advanced or Chantecaille Le Camouflage Stylo, and sweep from the inner corner of the eyes to the temples to give the illusion of an eye lift. Remember to only apply to the deepest and darkest shadows where needed, rather than all over the eye area.
Best for: blemishes
When it comes to blemishes, camouflage is key. “Find a concealer the same tone as your foundation. Once you have applied your base, use a brush to stipple concealer over the blemish. Make sure you cover a greater area than the blemish itself to ensure the concealer isn't too obvious,” says Hannah. Worried about concealer wear during the day? To ensure day-long coverage, Darren suggests setting with Hyaluronic Powder which gives an airbrushed and soft focus illusion to the skin.
Best for: discolouration
If discolouration is of great concern, it may be worth trying a brightening skincare treatment; Bobbi Brown’s Extra Bright Skin collection, SK-II Cellumination Aura Bright and La Prairie White Caviar Spot Treatment will help to treat problem areas. For more instant skin perfecting, Hannah recommends applying Bronzing Gel to soften the contrast between the different skin tones, then using foundation over the top. “If you can still see the unevenness, try using the Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick to further conceal,” she adds.
