The Mascara Guide
Long, curved and full of flutter, beauty fans the world over dream of eyelashes that cause a stir. But whether it’s a lack of length, an absence of volume or a curl that just never appears, lash issues among make-up mavens are in their abundance. Which is why, in our times of need, we turn to the ever-faithful wonders of mascara; and with the dash of a wand, our problems are solved. But, as with all beauty products, there are tips and tricks to achieving the look you want.
So from results-perfect application to ideal shelf life, we caught up with leading beauty experts and got their advice on utilising mascara to accomplish those oh-so coveted fluttery lashes.
On the best way to apply...
“Coat both sides of your top lashes in order to seal in the formula and achieve double the amount of volume. I also like to wiggle the wand at the base of my lash line from side to side in order to allow my lashes to curl and achieve maximum volume.” Olivia Chantecaille, Creative Director of Chantecaille.

On eyelash curlers...
“Often people think they have short lashes and it’s not the case. Usually they are just unbelievably straight so don’t give much definition to eyes. Curling them transforms the way they look. The best way to use curlers is on clean lashes, as close to the root as possible and pump the curler gently.” Rebecca Chantrell, Shiseido’s National Trainer.

On applying to bottom lashes...
“This opens the eyes. I would also suggest using coloured mascara on the lower lashes to make your eye colour pop.” Albane Laloy, By Terry International Make-up Artist.

On how to avoid flaking...
“Before applying, wipe the brush clean with a tissue for a clean, flake-free application,” advises Olivia Chantecaille.
Albane Laloy says, “Waterproof mascaras tend to last longer, but in general, good quality mascaras will not flake.” While Rebecca Chantrell thinks it’s a simple case of “removing mascara very well after each day.”

On removing mascara...
“A good cleansing oil will remove all traces of make-up, including mascara,” suggests Albane Laloy. “The By Terry Cellularose Cleansing Oil is fantastic and removes ALL traces of make-up! Gently massage the oil with fingertips and rinse off with water.”

On lashes that last...
If you want full lashes that last not only from day to night, but overnight, Estée Lauder’s just-launched Little Black Primer™ preps lashes so that they hold their shape, meaning you can benefit from long, voluminous lashes from the boardroom to the bar – just apply underneath your favourite mascara and you’re set. And if that wasn’t enough, Little Black Primer™ also acts as a subtle lash tint when used alone, and a water-resistant top coat.

On mascara shelf life...
“Most mascaras will have a 12-24 month window once opened, as indicated on the packaging. However, I think most mascaras work best after a few applications and give great results without drying out for a few months. If it is being used daily, then most will only last a few months before they run out,” advises Rebecca Chantrell.
For long lashes, use:
“By Terry’s Mascara Terrybly Growth Booster Mascara contains collagen and hyaluronic acid for a strong, silky and full-lash effect.” Albane Laloy.

For voluminous lashes, use:
“Shiseido’s new Full Lash Volume Mascara has a patented brush; you can use the back of the brush to volumise lashes - it builds up really nicely without clumping or feeling brittle so you can reapply before going out after work!” Rebecca Chantrell.

For curvaceous lashes, use:
“You won’t need eyelash curlers after a few coats of our mascaras. Our Faux Cils mascara looks better than a set of false lashes. It’s dramatically lengthening on its own, with its unique formula using Red Seaweed Extract. Our Faux Cils Longest Lash contains a lash-growth peptide that stimulates lash growth by 25%.” Olivia Chantecaille.
