YSL Beauty Get The Look

Autumn/Winter 2016 beauty arrives with a splash of colour this October with exciting Changing Faces masterclasses and makeovers taking over the Harrods Beauty Halls. In celebration of the power of make-up we spoke to Yves Saint Laurent Beauty’s Regional Make-Up Artist, Ffion Davies, to get the lowdown on the season’s statement lip…

The Prep…
“Create a smooth base using the Top Secrets Natural Action Exfoliator. It’s made with a soft citrus acid so is really mild, and when it’s ready to come off it turns into an oil which nourishes the skin. Also, when you’re focusing on the lips like we are, it’s gentle enough to use a little bit on the lips to take away any dead skin.”

The Base…
“Dot Touche Éclat Blur Primer on the forehead, nose and chin then work into the entire face with a brush or your fingers using circular motions. It has liquid gold in it so helps reflect light and increases radiance and luminosity. Then buff in Touche Éclat Le Teint Foundation using a circular motion for a dewy, radiant effect. For those with more oily skin, use a backwards and forwards motion instead for more of a matte finish.”

The Glow…
“Using Touche Éclat  is where you really capture the light. Apply on the high points of the cheekbones and all other areas where light would naturally hit the skin, so in between the eye brows, down the nose, on the chin and the Cupid’s bow.”

The Blush…
“When doing a high impact lip it's best to stick to a fresh complexion. Dot Baby Doll Kiss & Blush high up under the eye area, this is what we mean by ‘non-touring’. It’s a way of lifting the face without actually having to sculpt the cheekbones out. If you apply blusher low it brings everything downwards, whereas if you apply it on high points of the face then it lifts everything up.”

The Eyeshadow…
“Here, again, because we are focusing on the lips you need to keep it really, really light. Highlight the brow bone with the light shade in Couture Palette Eye Contouring, just dusting it underneath the arch of the brows. Use a medium, neutral matte to contour and open up the eyes, buffing on in a windscreen-wiper motion with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Finish off with a highlighter shade on the inner corners to make the eyes instantly shine.”

The Eyeliner…
“Using the new Couture Eye Marker, draw your eyeliner on in in little stages. I see so many people who try to do one long line all in one go, but instead start with the outside or in the middle and work inwards, leaving the inner corner area until last. If you want to wing it out the best thing to do is just to follow the direction of your lower lash line to give you the most natural line.”

The Mascara…
“For really stand-out lashes use the False Lash Effect Mascara. I love this one because it’s both lengthening and volumising. Apply in a zig-zag movement whilst lifting the lashes to allow separation and a more fanned effect. This mascara is really buildable and doesn’t get clumpy or spider-like so I usually go for two coats.”

The Lips…
“Line the lips with Dessin Des Lèvres Universal, which is a silicon lip pencil that is amazing not just for make-up artists, but for every woman. It’s transparent so it goes with every colour that you’ve got in your make-up bag and the silicon base stops lipstick from bleeding and feathering throughout the day. Don’t just line the lips though, you actually want to take it a little bit over the lip line to form a barrier. Then colour the lips using Vernis À Lèvres Vinyl Cream Liquid Lipstick. It has a really high shine lacquer finish which is really on trend, but even though it’s got a glossy look it isn’t sticky at all, it just feels like a normal lipstick. Apply one coat for a touch of colour and then add a second coat to double the impact. It’s a really great way of taking this look from day to night, from neutral to bold.”

The Final Look…
“I personally think this look can be adapted to fit all faces. Although keeping a natural base is key for this look, you can play with the liquid liner from the finest line to the most dramatic cat eye flick, the perfect combo for a day to night look.”
