Catwalk to Counter: Armani

The smoky eye is one of the prevailing beauty trends of the past few decades. Rocketed to the limelight by party girl Kate Moss, it also has major fashion credentials, reinvigorated season after season on runways across the globe. Why so popular? Quite simply, it is universally flattering and will enhance any peepers, regardless of eye-shape or colour.

National Face Designer, Thoa Tran, showed Beauty Writer Sarah Rose Edwards how to recreate Emporio Armani’s modern smoky eye at the counter in-store at Harrods.

  1. 1

    Step 1 contour cheekbones
Giorgio Armani Luminessence BB Fluid, Maestro Fusion Makeup Foundation and Maestro Eraser Concealer

Start with Luminessence BB Fluid to brighten - Armani catwalk skin is often matte but is never flat. Continue with Maestro Fusion Makeup Foundation, Maestro Eraser Concealer and set with Luminous Silk Powder. To create sharp cheekbones, use Eye Pencil No.2. Draw a line down the cheek and crosshatch across before blending for a perfect contour.

  2. 2

Step two creating a smoky eye
Giorgio Armani eyeliner, eye palette and mascara

Take a grey pencil, line the eye and waterline, and then draw a triangle at the outer corner. Next, smudge and mix with a dark powder colour to set the pencil and blend a lighter shade to soften the edges. Finish by adding black kohl along the waterline and two coats of Eyes to Kill Mascara.

  3. 3

    Step three applying red lipstick
Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy 400 and Rouge D’Armani 409

Take a dark lipstick like Rouge Ecstasy 400 and paint all over lips before blotting with a tissue for a soft, matte stain. For a two-tone look, apply Rouge D’Armani 409 straight from the tube to the centre of the bottom lip and press together to transfer colour. Finally, to fully recreate the catwalk look, paint a flash of this same colour on the inner eyelid and softly blend.

Final Result

Dark and dramatic, the smoky eye look enhances every feature on your face and whether you opt to pair with a more muted lip or all-out red, the overall effect is best worn for evening style with a dramatic dress.
