Summer Haircare Guide: Redhead

We’re all aware of the importance of keeping our skin safe in the sun, but your hair can also suffer during the summer months. For the redhead instalment of our Summer Haircare By Colour series, we’ve quizzed the best trichologists, colourists and stylists in the business, to get their tips on keeping red hair beautiful.

Natural Redheads

If you’re lucky enough to be a natural redhead, it’s likely you’ll have thicker hair than blondes or brunettes. “Red hair is the coarsest texture of any other colour of hair,” explains trichologist Philip Kingsley,“this means that redheads have less number of hairs on the scalp as each hair takes up more space.”

To avoid brittle, dry locks make sure to condition after every wash, and use a nourishing hair masque every week - Philip Kingsley’s award-winning Elasticizer is ideal.

If your hair feels drier or more damaged after a hot summer holiday, Flavien Abbas, celebrity hairdresser and Senior Art Director for Harrods’ Urban Retreat, recommends using; “Deep conditioning treatments every time you wash your hair, instead of traditional conditioner,” but he also adds that; “Blonde sun-kissed highlights in red hair does look good too.”

Colour-Treated Redheads

Anyone whose fiery red shade comes from the salon will know that it’s one of the hardest hair colours to maintain. “Red is a less stable colour and the fading of red hair is noticeable more quickly,” says Philip Kingsley, who suggests that using a protective styling cream can help prevent this occurring. His own Swimcap is ideal for the job, as is Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, a daily defence spray that’s perfect for keeping in your beach bag – just remember to spritz every time you reapply your sunscreen.
