5 Minutes With: Charlotte Tilbury
From the red carpets of Hollywood, to backstage at Fashion Week, Charlotte Tilbury is one of the industry’s most revered make-up artists. Not content with making over the fashion elite, she has also created her own sought-after beauty collection, which is now available to buy at harrods.com and in-store.
We caught up with Charlotte Tilbury to chat all things beauty.
When did you first become interested in make-up?
I discovered make-up when I was 13 and it changed my life. I started wearing mascara and overnight, everyone aged from 7-70 reacted to me in a very different way – I was more popular and I felt more confident. While at first it seemed like a depressing realisation, I soon realised that make-up is powerful – it’s every woman’s secret weapon. Make-up can give you the confidence to get that husband you’ve always wanted, change your job, move abroad and get a pay rise – it literally can make-up your destiny. Ever since that epiphany moment at 13, no one has ever seen me without make-up on! I definitely wouldn’t have this life and career without it.
What has been the defining moment of your career so far?
It’s too hard to pick one. I met Mert and Marcus in Ibiza and started working with them and Mario Testino during the ‘90s - this really kick-started my fashion career. We were all part of this collective that was creating glamorous fashion and beauty looks. At that time it was all about deconstructed fashion and we were doing something which was different, glossier and more aspirational.
What’s your signature beauty look?
I adore the Dolce Vita look from my collection and wear it pretty much every day. It’s a Mediterranean-style sultry, sexy and glamorous look; mesmerising copper and bronze eyes, a seductive feline flick with full, fluttering lashes and an alluring pink lip.
Tell us the story behind your popular Magic Cream…
The first product I created was my miracle-working moisturiser, Magic Cream – it’s packed with active ingredients and hyaluronic acid to flood the skin with moisture. I never found a cream that was rich enough to repair dry and tired skin but didn't block the pores and was the perfect base for make-up. I used to mix my own recipe to use backstage and on shoots so this was the first product I ever created. It actually named itself because models, photographers and designers would all be asking for my little pot of Magic Cream. I’d start Fashion Week laden with bags of it and end it noticeably lighter! I never start a make-up look without it.
Is there anyone you haven’t worked with yet but would like to?
The Queen – I’d love to work with her! She’s such an icon.
Your motto is "Give a woman the right make-up and she can conquer the world" – why do you think make-up is a powerful tool for women?
I remember being backstage at a runway show for the first time, when I was assisting Mary Greenwell and every single supermodel was in one room: Claudia, Christy, Naomi, Cindy, Stephanie, Linda and Helena. In a way, it was intimidating, but it was also breathtaking. I was looking at them as if they were from another planet. Then I realised, through make-up, you can achieve a little bit of that. Make-up really is a woman’s secret weapon. It can totally change your life; it can empower you.
What’s your best beauty tip?
There are so many tricks and tips! You can never have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas. I always start make-up with my miracle-working Magic Cream; it’s packed with active ingredients, like my patented BioNymph Peptide Complex, which leaves the skin looking plumped up, fresh and dewy.
