Tried And Tested: Iluminage Skin Smoothing Laser
At one time the most effective anti-ageing facial treatments were only available via your dermatologist; however, as technology progresses ever further, some of these advanced skincare devices can now be purchased to use at home.
Case in point, Iluminage’s Skin Smoothing Laser. The result of nearly a decade of research, this hand-held device delivers pulses of laser light to a specific depth below the surface of the skin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. 78% of women tested demonstrated a significant improvement in fine lines and wrinkles in just two weeks – you can’t ignore stats like that so our Beauty Writer, Sarah Edwards, put the gadget to the test.
Some beauty gadgets can be quite complicated to assemble, but the Skin Smoothing Laser was simple and quick to set up. I simply removed the machine from the box and plugged it in to charge. The device has a minimal, sculptural design with a discreet LED display in the handle that lights up while charging; this is where all the settings are controlled.
As tempting as it was to leap straight in and begin the treatment, the brand recommend that you should assess your skin using the diagrams at this point. Looking into a well-lit mirror, I could identify areas of concern and used the blank face chart at the back of the booklet to plan a treatment plan for the eye area.
Testing the device
Before treating the face, it is advised to test the device on your forearm. I made sure the LED was set to low and placed the tip of the hand piece against my skin – it instantly made contact and emitted a white flash before delivering a quick laser pulse. Now, as to the question on everyone’s lips - is it painful? As anyone who has had laser treatments will testify, it is misleading to say that you won’t feel the pulse – I’d liken it to a short, sharp snap against the skin. You soon get used the the sensation and I was happy to continue.
Treating the face
Each laser pulse should overlap slightly, so you are advised to move the device tip a quarter of an inch each time. Once I had mastered this on the forearm I moved up to the face. There is a comprehensive guide in the booklet showing the direction and frequency you should move – I averaged 30 pulses for each eye area. My sensitive skin reddened from the flashes, so I kept my setting low and did the treatment every other day rather than consecutively.
Though wrinkles are not a major concern for me yet, my skin looked plumper and healthier after three weeks using the device – I think it acts as a good preventative as well as a treatment, and I shall continue using for this reason alone. Also, it is worth noting that this is one of the most advanced and user-friendly at-home lasers that I have tested. The tip of the device makes contact with the skin instantly, and the touch-responsive laser activation, as opposed to a button, means progress is swift. This may just be the investment your skin has been waiting for.
