Men’s Grooming: Top Tips

How much thought and time do you dedicate to your shaving regime? The daily razor swipe may be second nature, but during the colder months your skin may be dehydrated and susceptible to irritation. We spoke to Deborah Gayle, the General Manager at The Refinery at Harrods, to find out how to perfect your shaving routine. We also got the lowdown on what the male models were using backstage at London Collections: Men from Wendy Rowe, Burberry’s Creative Consultant.

“Skin should be warm so use a flannel with hot water or shave after a shower, and use a shaving oil to soften skin before using the soap,” advises Deborah. Next, use a good shaving brush to apply your soap, “this lifts up the hair so the razor can get as close to the skin as possible,” says Deborah.

Deborah recommends always using a post-shave balm to calm the skin. Soothe irritation with Kiehl’s Post Shave Repair Gel’s cooling peppermint oil and aloe vera, or inject moisture back into dry complexions with ClarinsMen Super Moisture Balm. If shaving pre-event, multi-task with a perfumed balm; Fahrenheit Shaving Balm features the masculine notes of Dior’s classic scent.

While we are not suggesting a full make-up regime, there are a few clever products that the modern man can benefit from as a final grooming step. Wendy Rowe has worked backstage at Burberry Prorsum Menswear for many seasons, and knows a thing or two about enhancing model looks: “The make-up is really refined. It is undetectable, but adds a uniformity and finish to the look, not that you should notice.” Her top recommendations? “Burberry BB Cream is ideal for both men and women as it’s not glittery.”

If a beard is your look of choice, it requires just as much upkeep as a clean-shaven complexion. “Beards should be treated like hair on the head: cleansed with shampoo, conditioned and kept trim,” says Deborah. “Comb the beard daily to keep it tidy and use shaving oil to keep it in shape.” We love Tom Ford’s richly perfumed Conditioning Beard Oil Oud Wood.
