The Perfect Red Lipstick

The red lip is one of beauty’s most-loved trends. Seen season after season on the runway, a rouge pout can come in many guises, rendering it suitable for almost any occasion. From a dark berry stain at Dolce & Gabbana, to fresh red at Burberry and coral shine at Antonio Berardi, red truly is the colour of the moment for Spring/Summer 2015.

Though popular, red lipstick can also be daunting for some; not only is there a myriad different tones to choose from, but it requires exacting application. To make things a little easier we’ve consulted the experts to bring you a quick guide to choosing and applying the perfect red lipstick.

“When choosing a shade of red it is always best to start by looking at your natural lip colour and use that as a guide to help you,” explains Bobbi Brown Education Executive James McGuigan. “If your lips have more of a cooler pink tone naturally, then a cooler tone of red will suit best. If your lips have more of a warmer pink tone naturally, then a warmer red will suit best.”

“For Asian skin tones a red/coral looks great, try Dolce & Gabbana Cream Lipstick in Carnal or Scarlet,” advises Make-Up Artist Massimiliano della Maggesa. And for darker skin tones? “Black Magic is a very popular true red – I advise applying liner all over the lips to create the right canvas for the lipstick”.

Matte – matte lipstick is great long-wear option for both day and night.
Classic – this easy-to-wear choice is ideal for lipstick newbies.
Shine/Shimmer - try this lightweight sheerer option for summer holidays or parties.
Gloss – if you feel traditional lipstick is too much for day, switch to a gloss in your favourite shade.

Try this innovative trick from Esteé Lauder to make your lipstick last:

Step 1: Using a powder brush, dust bare lips all over with Lucidity Translucent Pressed Powder.
Step 2: Apply your lipstick using a lip brush. Once it's applied, use your fingertip to gently press the shade onto your lips.
Step 3: Take a tissue and peel it apart, making it 1-ply instead of 2-ply as you will need it to be thin to complete the next step.
Step 4: Lay the tissue over your lips and again dust Lucidity Translucent Pressed Powder on top.
Step 5: Remove the tissue and add one more coat of lipstick as a finishing touch.
