MaxMara's latest collection was inspired by Marilyn Monroe - but not as we know her. Behind the legendary bombshell's beauty was a great intellect, as proven by the vast library of books she left behind and her enrolment in UCLA night classes at the height of her stardom. George Barris' photo of the actress on the beach splashing about in a chunky knit cardigan and thick blanket captured the real side of Marilyn and was the trigger for the Autumn/Winter show. On a backdrop of crashing waves, models including Joan Smalls and Gigi Hadid came swaddled in sumptuous outerwear, narrow pencil skirts and shrunken cashmere sweaters. The bookish side was presented via chic horn-rimmed glasses and menswear influences, with boyfriend coats topping slip dresses and tasselled loafers accompanying the looks. Autumn/Winter is MaxMara's strong season for the chance to showcase its stand-out outerwear. This season it comprised oversized blanket-style coats in a palette of ivory, camel and caramel and quilted parkas with fur trims.
