Stella McCartney AW16
The lowdown: "Sensual with a sense of humour and a tomboy side," Stella McCartney promised ahead of her show, and the designer stayed true to her word. Veering between the girly - metallic pleated midi skirts, ruffled knits, delicate cocktail dresses with Swiss lace collars - and the masculine - trompe-l'oeil off-the-shoulder velvet tuxedo jackets, tweed high-waisted trousers with unbuttoned cuff hems - McCartney did what she does best, which is to create strong silhouettes with effortlessly feminine accents.
Sportswear, a long-term reference point for the designer, was apparent in the elasticated cords looped through washed denim dresses and voluminous quilted parkas, which came in velvet for a plush twist. This was an incredibly tactile collection, mixing together fabrics like silk, jacquard, tulle and velvet in elegant tones of rose, forest green, teal, mustard and peach against a luminous background of molten metallics.
