If last season was an ode to the Sixties, Frida Giannini's Spring/Summer collection for the Italian powerhouse had a definite feel of the Seventies about it. And why not? The decade was arguably Gucci's most successful one, with tastemakers including Jackie Onassis regularly flying the flag. Here, A-line skirt suits were teamed with chunky platform sandals, sailor-style trousers came gently flared at the calf and suede trenches or boho fur gilets topped midi skirts and suede knee-high boot combos. Handbags appeared with canvas straps in the house's signature red and green stripes or bucket style in rich shades of brown, orange and rust. Details including military brass buttons and stewardess-style handkerchiefs knotted at the neck gave the collection a uniform feel to it, a concept championed this season by heavyweight designers, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham and Christopher Kane. Once again Gucci finds itself bang on trend.
