Marc By Marc Jacobs SS15
Marc Jacobs almost couldn't contain his excitement as he sat front row at his Marc By Marc Jacobs diffusion line show, put on by design duo Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley. Tapping his sneakered feet to the music and chatting animatedly to Katie Grand, the designer nodded in approval with each exit. And it's no wonder. Having enjoyed rave reviews with their skater-inspired collection last season, the designers' spring/summer line-up acted as a natural evolution but felt closer in spirit to MJ's original collections for the brand. The fusion of girly and sporty was exactly right: bandeau bikini tops in preppy polkadots appeared over crisp white shirts or had printed T-shirts tucked into them. Hooded capelets in waterproof material came over narrow tube skirts or cropped trousers and parachute shirt dresses in popping fuchsia and cobalt were teamed with black PVC sleeves and stockings. A monochrome parade then took to the runway, with white shirts and full black skirts featuring peaked pockets and origami-style pleats. The fusion of shirt, T-shirt and ra-ra skirt all on a single garment was the ultimate expression of this fashion mash-up. Accessories included circular sunglasses and disc-shaped oversized totes. As they took their bow, Bartley and Hillier were embraced by Marc in an energetic hug - surely the ultimate seal of approval.
