Carolina Herrera SS16
The lowdown: Looking timelessly (and seasonless-ly) chic in her signature crisp white shirt and a black pleated skirt, designer to the stars Carolina Herrera, presented her Spring/Summer line to a VIP audience that included Penelope Cruz and super-snapper Mario Testino at New York's Frick Collection (the first time a fashion show has ever been staged here). Arranged around a spectacular courtyard complete with imposing fountain, the Upper East Side museum served as the perfect backdrop for the collection, which managed to feel both classic and contemporary at the same time. Opening with a series of petal-pink dresses boasting mesh slices to simulate pleats (and sometimes pockets and collars), Herrera did the unthinkable - at least for the Upper East Side - and fused sportswear with ladies-who-lunch wear. From there, sculpted tulle numbers appeared in navy or black, with gleaming white used for contrast and the odd pop of fuchsia to rev things up. But femininity was still firmly on the agenda thanks to bow belts, floral earrings, frothy layers of chiffon and delicate appliqués and flocking.
Who we saw: Penelope Cruz
