The lowdown: This season, basics received the 'Karl' treatment at Fendi, where crisp shirts were cut to voluminous proportions and leather separates came smocked and whip-stitched. Dresses, from apron-style cotton midis to printed chiffon maxis, featured chunky sewn-on pockets and cut-outs at the hips. Leg-of-lamb sleeves and wasp waists redefined the house's signature silhouette, which has grown more contemporary in the last few seasons, all the while managing not to alienate the house's traditional customer. For them, there are the furs, present even in summer, this time appearing as shrunken intarsia jackets in bold primary hues, and the handbags, also whipstitched and boxy, looking like a plumped-up version of the Peekaboo. In a palette of primary red, denim blue, coral and white, the line-up was fresh and exciting.
