Those attentively refreshing Instagram for a slice of the Gucci action as the Spring/Summer 2017 collection hit the runway were disappointed – as were the front row frustrated in their failed efforts of a decent post – for the dimly-lit, floor-to-ceiling pink show space was engulfed in a cloud of dry ice ahead of the first exit. Even if this was a deliberate attempt to obscure, however, it only upped the sense of Michele magic with which the Creative Director has imbued the Florentine fashion house since taking the helm at the start of 2015.
Entitled ‘Illusion of Love’, the collection gave Gucci fanatics a souped-up dose of what they’ve come to know and love of the revitalised brand: an eclectic mash-up of ideas and eras played out in exquisitely rich fabrics boasting fantastic embroidery, charismatic motifs, studs, sequins and – in collaboration with artist Jayde Fish – a series of prints that play on iconic Gucci tropes, such as the serpent.
What to wear with a peak collar tweed blazer and cropped, wide-leg trouser pairing, or a brocade kimono layered over racing-striped, bow-stitched leggings? Accessories aplenty, of course. If not an embroidered fan, then crystal-studded sunglasses, a GG belt, chandelier earrings and any one of the need-now reincarnations of the brand’s trusted handbag silhouettes.
