Interview With: Roland Mouret
What inspired you to become a designer - how did you get into fashion?
I grew up as the son of a butcher; I would watch my father drape and fold his apron to hide the stained pattern of blood, which has inspired my technique. Fashion wasn’t something I realised I wanted to do immediately, but in life you go through a series of emotions and I soon realised I was attracted to something creative. It’s an organic process that grew on its own.

Was there a particular woman in mind when you designed the Galaxy dress?
I designed it around a woman who enjoys being a woman; someone who loves her figure and embraces her independence.
If you could dress anybody right now, who would it be and why?
I’ve had the fortune of amazing support on the red carpet. I just love seeing all women in my clothes.
What's the one fashion item you couldn't possibly part with?
I can’t live without a good leather bag as I travel so much. Also my iPad is my lifeline!
Do you have any style tips for AW14 - what are the key trends to know?
Mixing heavy fabrics with light fabrics, sharp silhouettes with soft silhouettes and colour blocking separates is always a favourite of mine.
This is your first exclusive online collection with Harrods – how do you feel a digital presence can help evolve a fashion brand?
A digital presence enables the customer to have a 360 view of the brand. Today, customers want to see beyond product, a digital presence allows them to have an intimate experience with the brand.
What was the inspiration behind the collection for Harrods?
I wanted to update some of my favourite pieces for the Harrods woman.
What's coming up next for the label?
I am opening my first international store in the heart of New York City on Madison Avenue this summer, as well as the launch of my online flagship www.rolandmouret.com.
How does it feel to work with Harrods on an exclusive collection - what does Harrods mean to you?
Working with Harrods has always been a dream of mine and to be picked up by the company was an incredible moment for me. Creating this capsule collection with Harrods is an absolute honour and pleasure.
How would you sum up British fashion – what do you feel its importance is in the wider global fashion industry?
British women are not afraid of fashion. Their fearlessness is an inspiration to me; you can feel the creativity in the air here and all eyes are on London designers for that 'something new' each season. I love that this is my creative home and 70% of my production comes out of Britain - I wouldn't be able to do what I do anywhere else other than London.
