Michael Kors Talks Fashion And Film
As he presents his glamorous Icons Of Style event - a curated film series exploring the role of fashion in American film over three decades, designer Michael Kors talks all things fashion, film and summer fun...
Tell us about your Icons Of Style event, how did it come about?
I’ve always been inspired by Hollywood and the connection between film and fashion. From the actresses to the characters they portray to the times and places they transport us to, there is no shortage of inspiration. But I also think it’s a mutually beneficial relationship - the clothes can make an actor or actress someone else entirely. That’s why the costumes are so important. When the opportunity to talk about the subject came up, I was excited - and when some of my favourite actresses agreed to be a part of it, I was elated.

What's your favourite film for fashion?
I could never choose just one. I love the three that we’re screening, of course. I think Ali MacGraw in Love Story defined preppy bohemian chic, while Kate Hudson in Almost Famous made rock’n’roll glamorous and Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair took laid-back glamour to a new level. Combined, they give you a snapshot into the evolution of American fashion.
If you could be any character from a movie, who would it be?
Jay Gatsby is one of my favourite fictional characters, so I’d say him. Plus, the costumes would be divine.
What's coming up this year for Michael Kors?
We’re very excited because the God’s Love We Deliver Michael Kors building will be opening over the summer, helping the New York-based organisation deliver even more meals to people in need while also growing their own ingredients and working within the community to teach healthy cooking classes. We also continue to work with the United Nations World Food Programme as part of our ongoing Watch Hunger Stop campaign to fight hunger around the globe.
Where's your ultimate holiday destination and why?
Bora Bora! We’ve never been because it’s a long flight and the best time to go is in August, which is when we finally have true beach weather in New York. I’ve built it up so much in my head over the years it’s like a dream, but we’ll get there one day.
What's the new bag on the block at Kors?
The Riley is great for the woman who is always on the go. It’s a little softer and has a crossbody strap and top handles. In different sizes you can really choose one that works for your lifestyle - whether you’re the type of person who carries just the essentials or everything you could ever need.
What's your top tip for the summer season?
Play with colour! There’s no better time for it — and with crisp white, it pops against sun-kissed skin.
