All-Things Stella McCartney

Fashion, friendship and enduring style; with the global face of woman as her muse, Stella McCartney takes us inside her world in this exclusive chat...

On Her Inspiration...

"The two seasons - Spring and Summer 2016 at Stella McCartney - work hand in hand. Spring is very much celebrating the season and the build up to summer in that it's really about celebrating life, being in the moment and watching the growth of flowers, reflected in all the embroidered flower work on the pieces. There is a lot of bold colour and voluminous, airy silhouettes such as the yellow dress. The nature of the season really plays through the collection. And then Summer is high in-your-face Summer. It’s super strong and really vibrant.

With print, I’m always keen on some print in my collections and I think it’s nice to have a wearable print but that says something too. The horse print comes from my love of horse-riding. You can't go wrong with a horse as far as I’m concerned."

"We have the Stella woman very much in mind in everything we do. She is a global woman... We are really trying to consider her needs..."

On The Stella Woman...

"We have the Stella woman very much in mind in everything we do. She is a global woman, she is every age, every size, every nationality. We are really trying to consider her needs; what does she need right now and how can we serve her."

On Her Influences...

"I’m constantly trying to observe women – that’s my job. I try to go out to a lot of events to come into contact with my women – to learn what real women want. Women are actually pretty similar whether they’re famous or not – we all have the same needs. We all feel crap about ourselves some days, other days we feel great, we’re all insecure, other times we’re all secure. Sometimes we need a little help. I’m trying to make women feel confident in themselves."

On The Designer And The Customer...

"I think fashion can really help and conversely also really not help. The fashion industry was different when I was growing up to how it is now. I never loved that disconnect, that the designer and the house felt so fabulous and so brilliant that you weren't allowed to even go and look around if you couldn’t afford it - there it was such a level of distance between them and the customer. That’s not where I’m coming from at all. We are doing our best to try to bring pieces in for everyone - we have perfume, denim, accessories, keep-forever pieces we think will serve you better than buying seven handbags that you’re going to end up throwing out."

On British Style...

"I’ve always thought that British fashion was obviously the best. I think it’s the best on the street. For me fashion starts with real people, it’s not necessarily the design houses, it’s the culture, it’s the melting pot of madness of the city, the way that people express themselves, they’re kind of fearless, they have a great sense of humour, they’re irreverent. We created punk rock here and I think you can see that in the fashion."

On The Muse...

"I really honestly am never good at picking out a single muse. For me, women are the things that inspire me – how they are feeling, their emotional needs and that’s what really inspires and drives me."

On The World Of Stella At Harrods

"Sunglasses, accessories, ready-to-wear, perfume - it’s great to be at Harrods, syou're housing so much of the World of Stella here so it’s a wonderful relationship and partnership."
