Party season has arrived and there is one fabric that perfectly suits the occasion - velvet. Richly opulent and exuding AW14's Gothic Fairytale trend, velvet, whether on a dress, gown, handbag or shoes, will see you create darkly romantic evening looks.
Steeped in historical grandeur - think Baroque court dresses - velvet was last at its prime in the '90s when crushed velvet spaghetti strap dresses were de rigueur. For AW14, velvet takes a more modern turn. Hedi Slimane gave 1960s-inspired shifts a Wednesday Addams makeover in black velvet at Saint Laurent while Emilio Pucci showed a tailored velvet two-piece in emerald green.
On the red carpet, model Crystal Renn recently chose a Chanel embellished velvet floor-sweeper of a gown while Cara Delevingne kookily worked that Emilio Pucci catwalk jacket as a dress in sapphire blue.
Best in black or jewel tones, you don't need to wear velvet head-to-toe to make an impact. Dolce & Gabbana's catwalk bags in embellished velvet provided a luxurious accent to its AW14 catwalk looks. Luxe on heels and when ornately beaded or embroidered, this fabric is really the ultimate choice for evening allure.
