Fashion Formula: Sweater + Skirt

A pretty spring skirt is a perennial style staple that heralds the start of the warmer months, but SS14 sees this ladylike favourite take style cues from the track, introducing a dose of Sports Luxe styling into the mix. From miniskirts and pencil silhouettes to flirty pleated midis, the fashion pack are getting extra mileage from their favourite pieces with help from the classic cotton sweatshirt. An ‘80s gym kit favourite with a slouchy fit and ribbed trims, this expert mix of high-low style promises instant style kudos and a nonchalant ‘what, this old thing?’ attitude for all occasions.

Kate Bosworth worked the trend after-dark in head-to-toe Topshop, pairing an oversized leather jumper with an asymmetric silver pencil skirt for a modern tomboy feel, while Scarlett Johansson eased into spring with long sleeves and bare legs for a more feminine silhouette courtesy of Proenza Schouler. Rounding off the trio, our street style one-to-watch, Eva Chen, Editor in Chief at Lucky Magazine and all-around Instagram fashion icon, proved this effortless formula can be dressed up or down – switch out the chunky mules for skater slip-ons to push the look firmly into weekend territory.
