Summer Leather Six Ways

The mainstay of autumnal layering and warm winter outfits, leather has piqued many a designer’s interest of late, causing brands across the board to develop innovative techniques and summer-worthy styles that have us lusting after it in warmer weather, too.

Whether you choose to rethink a transseasonal classic or invest in an unexpected sartorial saviour, scroll through our edit above to find out how to keep wearing leather throughout the summer months.

1. The Leather Mini

While there’s no point pretending the leather mini is anything new, stripped of its winter association with thick black tights, it becomes something entirely different. The ultimate play of skin-on-skin, balance bare legs by pairing the skirt with a simple top, as seen on the Rag & Bone SS14 runway.

2. Colour Block

Black might be versatile but coloured leather feels that much fresher for summer. With brands including The Row and Joseph offering leather leggings in myriad hues, make like Olivia Palermo and style them with a matching blazer for an effortlessly chic look.

3. The Perennial Biker

An investment piece that pays dividends, the biker jacket is an all-year staple for the likes of Kate Moss and Miranda Kerr. While it’s the perfect topper for classic cotton T-shirts, layering leather with fluid silk feels like the height of luxury.

4. Leather Skinnies

Black leather skinnies are part of Saint Laurent's permanent collection, such is the year-round demand. A far cry from the thick leather trousers of yesteryear, today’s lightweight, stretchy styles certainly warrant the term ‘second skin’; you’ll barely know you’re wearing them.

5. The Leather Dress

Nothing feels quite as sumptuous as tissue-thin leather against the skin, so make the most of it by opting for a leather dress this summer. Best served up in neat, uncomplicated shapes, go bodycon à la Cameron Diaz in The Row or try a timeless tunic from the Harrods of London collection.

6. Top Quality

No longer the preserve of outerwear, look to leather in the form of T-shirts, tanks and collared blouses to let your top half get its fix; the ideal way to make the most of printed trousers and pleated skirts.
