Harrods Hosts Spectacular Fundraising Gala In Aid Of The Garden Bridge Trust
Transformed into an enchanted garden, famous Harrods restaurant, The Georgian, was host to special guests for a fundraising gala held in support of London’s new landmark, the Garden Bridge, this week.
Guests, including HRH Princess Beatrice and actress and campaigner, Joanna Lumley, enjoyed a gourmet three-course dinner, took part in live and silent auctions and were also treated to a live set by award-winning singer/songwriter, Jessie Ware.
The event, which raised an impressive £257,000, provided the unique opportunity to win special prizes including a Harrods-at-home dinner party, an exclusive Royal Academy of Arts private tour and tickets to a sold-out Rugby World Cup match. All the proceeds will go towards creating the Garden Bridge across the River Thames.
The Garden Bridge, scheduled to be ready in the summer of 2018, was originally conceived by actress and campaigner, Joanna Lumley, and designed by Thomas Heatherwick, who also designed the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron. People will take a journey through London's horticultural history as they cross the bridge, from wild marshland to cultivated gardens, with 6,000 sq m of new open space. It will feature thousands of shrubs, perennials, ferns, grasses and bulbs, and 270 trees, which have been picked to thrive all year round by Dan Pearson, critically acclaimed landscape designer and winner of Best in Show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2015.
Joanna Lumley, Trustee of The Garden Bridge Trust, said: “The Trust is thrilled that Harrods is generously organising this event. For the Garden Bridge to have already raised £127m in funding from the private sector, charitable trusts, and individuals, on top of the initial public funding, is an extraordinary achievement. It shows just how much support there is for this unique new green space and river crossing. It’s enormously helpful to have the support of Harrods, a world-famous London institution, to bring us closer to providing a new garden and river crossing for the capital.”
