Elgar Johnson Talks Style

Guest editing his take on the 24/7 wardrobe every guy needs, Fashion Director at GQ Style Elgar Johnson shares his thoughts on all-things menswear and British fashion...

On How It All Began...
"I had two very fashion obsessed sisters growing up and they introduced me to many things like David Bowie, Boy George, The Jam, Madness, The Specials, Neneh Cherry, Suede, Blur, The Face and i-D magazine. I don’t think I understood it at all but I liked looking at the people looking so different to me."

On Alternative Career Options...
If I hadn't ended up in fashion, I think I would have been in the Army.

On Personal Style...
My style is super casual streetwear. My staples are a good shirt, pair of jeans and a pair of white trainers, then wallabees or loafers.

Favourite Fashion Era...
"I loved the 90s - I thought it was a great time for menswear. The clothing may not have been the most interesting, but the attitude and swagger was intense."

Go-To Brands...
Has to be Stone Island, Ralph Lauren, Adidas, Nike, Church’s and Prada.

On British Menswear...
"There’s a lot going on with the British menswear fashion industry currently. I think menswear in the UK takes more risks. Sometimes you can really feel that the collection was based on an idea that the designer had on a night out! That isn’t a negative by the way, it’s a huge positive - it's refreshing and it feels real. Maybe that’s why the UK is the capital for creative ideas in this industry, well that’s my opinion anyway."

On London Hang-Outs...
"I love pubs in South London. They're really chilled and play really good music like Elastica and Blur. You feel like you're stuck in a time warp. They have carpet on the floor, darts boards and snooker tables."

Style Tips For Right Now...
"Be yourself and wear the clothes, not the other way round."
