Harrods sponsors Future Contemporaries Party 2016

The Future Contemporaries Party 2016

An unmissable night in London’s social calendar, Harrods partnered with Serpentine Galleries to host The Future Contemporaries Party 2016 in the Zaha Hadid-designed Serpentine Sackler Gallery.

Celebrated for bringing together leading young artists, philanthropists and collectors, the party, which took place during London Fashion Week, gathered quite the crowd this year: Future Contemporaries members HRH Princess Eugenie of York, Magdalena Gabriel and Jake Parkinson-Smith were joined by artists and A-listers alike, including Derek Blasberg, designer Sophie Hulme and models Lily Donaldson, Edie Campbell and Alice Dellal.

“Future Contemporaries was started with the intention of bringing in young people who are under 40 and like art, but had perhaps found some of the other art galleries a bit stuffy. It exists to encourage younger people to get involved in art,” explained Jake, grandson of the legendary photographer, Norman Parkinson, adding: “Personally, I think the Future Contemporaries parties are becoming better than the Serpentine Summer Party – it’s a younger crowd and it’s more fun.”

Fellow member Magdalena – sporting a brand new pair of Edgardo Osorio for Salvatore Ferragamo stilettos – agreed: “Why did I want to get involved? It’s an interesting programme with interesting people and fantastic events. It’s inspirational.”

For artist Alessandro Bava, who was commissioned to create an architectural installation for the event that invited partygoers to climb inside it, the Future Contemporaries are a “support structure”. Speaking to him on the night, he attested: “The party is a moment to celebrate but I guess the important work is done via residencies and commissions, and, of course, in funding the Future Contemporaries programme. There are a lot of young artists in London that work with the Serpentine Galleries in different capacities and I think this is probably the most important role that it could possibly have.”

With a live performance from Jack Peñate and 2 Many DJs taking over to keep the dancefloor full, plus Marmalade Mule and The Happy Berry cocktails provided by Stolichnaya Elit and canapés aplenty, this was a night to remember.
