For the love of art

Feature: Long Read
Words by Grace Cain

You didn’t come here for cliché questions, but we’re going to give you one anyway. How do you define an artist? There are those who paint, those who sculpt, and those who are annoyingly talented in any medium they set their hands on (we’re looking at you, Andy Warhol).

But there are also those who spend years developing a state-of-the-art speaker, or honing the craft of the perfect Mille-feuille. And how about the dedicated architect in the Harrods Interior Design team, or the manicurist who has spent countless hours training to be a nail artist at the beauty influencer-favourite, Townhouse? Here in Knightsbridge, if you’re not making something into a fine art… well, it’s not worth doing it at all.

Halcyon Gallery

It’s not just the selection of works by established and emerging artists that makes the Halcyon Gallery so special – it’s also the exclusive exhibition previews, the visits to artists’ studios, and the well-informed experts waiting to help build your own exceptional collection.

Halcyon Gallery

If contemporary art is your signature style, you’ve come to the right place.

Lorenzo Quinn

Quinn On Display

Here’s a riddle for you. Where in Harrods will you be most likely to stumble upon a sculpture by world-renowned artist Lorenzo Quinn? Is it: A. While shopping for a bespoke chess in The Arcade, Lower Ground Floor; B. In the Halcyon Gallery on the Third Floor; or C. After enjoying your Guam Traditional Detox Seaweed Mud Wrap in the new Hair and Beauty Salon? Answer: all of the above. Quinn’s distinctive works are located in various locations throughout our Knightsbridge store, bringing the decor of each area to life with a flourish.

Lorenzo Quinn

“Whenever I’m in Harrods, I visit the Halcyon Gallery to see my work and talk to people passing by. I love that serendipitous moment when people realise I’m the artist.”

Eat Your Art Out

Not all masterpieces are found on canvases – some are found in the Harrods Food Hall. Look out for the coffee roastery, where our resident expert Bartosz Ciepaj transforms your morning pick-me-up into a kind of alchemy; and the Chocolaterie, where our innovative in-house chefs craft fresh bonbons and indulgent filled bars. If you’ve yet to discover the perfect brew, consult tea tailor Angelo Tantillo. An expert in layering flavours, Tantillo turns tea into a fine art, guiding you through our extensive portfolio of blends while quizzing you on your tastes in order to mix a bespoke blend that's completely unique to you. Then there’s the hand-crafted patisserie, the freshly baked bread, the museum-worthy bespoke cakes… you get the picture.

Let's Get Technical

Technology is a great conduit for art. Headphones supply music, TVs provide film, and a laptop equips you with infinite options for both consuming and creating work. Sometimes, however, the technology itself is the art.

Samsung Frame TV

Screens may take up a lot of our time, but they need not take up wall space. Whether you have a hankering for Hokusai or a penchant for Picasso, transform your Frame TV into one of the world’s greatest masterpieces with just a click of a button.

Devialet Phantom

Imagine a night at the opera, except you don't have to leave the sofa. An ode to a European cultural institution, Devialet’s limited-edition Gold Phantom Opéra de Paris is also a serious piece of tech: think patented Analogue Digital Hybrid technology offering ultra-rich sound.

Home Is Where the Art Is

If you’re feeling inspired to give your home its own cultural renaissance, begin with the fundamentals. Start small (yet mighty) with a special-edition Mont Blanc pen that pays tribute to Jazz Age legend George Gershwin, for example, or a framed and numbered print from Emma J Shipley. Can’t decide? Why don’t you sleep on it: Savoir Beds’ Felix style can be printed with the painting of your choice.
