How to Decorate Your Home for Christmas
Feature: Long Read
Words by Bilen Zeremariam
Ah, Christmas: a time for twinkly lights and glittering decorations. But how do you channel maximum festive spirit without compromising on style? Edgy and bold, pared back and elegant; regardless of the aesthetic you strive for this year, keep it consistent and confidence will win out.
Step 1: Get Inspired
First, define your decorative scheme, starting with two or three colours. Draw ideas from places, films and magazines; there’s so much more to festive styling than red, green and gold. Try frosty silvers, pearly whites and iridescent hues, or black with gold. Forest greens, soft browns and beige make for a contemporary Nordic look, while teal and gold offer a touch of glamour.
Step 2: Think Beyond the Tree
Deck the halls, the entrance, the bannister, the mantelpiece, the sofa… you get the picture. I like to focus on four key areas, then build the look from there.
IT'S IN THE DETAILS
"Luxury is in the finer details. Once you’ve decorated the main areas, tie the whole look together with a few finishing touches: think baubles dangling delicately from chandeliers, trinkets on bookcases and warming winter home fragrances."
Step 3: Lay the Table
Turn your table into a festive fairy tale this Christmas. If it's made of wood, marble or metal you can do this quite simply with a few props, like candles, pine cones and trinkets. Just consider height when selecting accessories, so that nothing is obstructing anyone’s view. Otherwise, choose table linen that reflects your overall colour scheme and add accent colours with glassware and crockery. Placemats will add texture and give your table a luxurious feel, while napkins can be styled any number of ways: try tying them with ribbon, wrapping them round cutlery, or placing them on a plate with a single flower or stem.
"Bespoke elements will always make your table feel more special. This Christmas, why not try your hand at hand-written place cards? Or for something polished, turn to the Harrods Personalisation team."
