Never have two words caused so much confusion. But dissect the smart-casual edict, and the instruction is simply one of balance. This means downplaying a dinner-jacket shape in linen, upscaling denim jeans with a deeper wash or subbing in cream chinos. Smart-casual is the sartorial response to much of summer’s sporting calendar, too. Wimbledon has no official dress code, but you’ll still want to sharpen up if you’re seated at Centre or No.1 Courts. The majority of polo tournaments also operate a smart-casual policy, and many don’t require a tie. In place of neck furniture, deliver flair via other means – sunglasses, a pocket square or tasselled loafers.
