AW21: The Women’s Trend Report

What a difference a year makes. Just 12 short months ago, you couldn’t prize us away from loungewear – now, it’s TTFN to elasticated comfort and a hearty “How do you do?” to looks that celebrate a return to normality, or at least a version of it. Read on for the trends, brands and collections making headlines for Autumn/Winter 2021.

Monochrome Magic

You might think monochrome is as simple as black and white. Think again. In the absence of colour, other design elements – clarity of detail, impeccable craftsmanship, endlessly flattering silhouettes – come to the fore.

Where There’s a Wool...

It wouldn’t be Autumn/Winter without knitwear playing a starring role – but this season is far from a one-wool show. The Row, Totême and more make a case for comfort in numbers, with the likes of layer-cake cashmere bringing plushness and warmth to our everyday wardrobe rotation.

Fifty Shades of Brown

What oatmeal was to SS21, chocolatey hues are to autumn. You’ll see them everywhere if Loewe, Hermès and Proenza Schouler are any indication. Worn in tandem with another of AW21’s key trends – leather – the full brown gamut makes for a deliciously luxurious addition to your neutrals edit.

Soft Suiting

The antithesis of WFH (read: working from home) attire, tailoring makes a welcome return for Autumn/Winter 2021 – albeit softer and less restrictive than its previous incarnations. Oversized blazers and slouchy trousers allow for movement akin to loungewear, but appear chic and put-together.

Bright Young Things

It’s said that the best things come to those who wait – and designers are rewarding our patience on the partywear front with sequins, embellishment and the frothiest frou-frou. So far, so now... until you factor in the accompanying wave of nostalgic silhouettes. Drop waists via Louis Vuitton, straight-line minis courtesy of Bottega Veneta – each provide moments of escapism with throwbacks to the Roaring Twenties and Swingin’ Sixties.

Colour Me Happy

Dubbed ‘dopamine dressing’ by the fashion set, wearing colour has been theorized to lift the spirits – which is all the reasoning we’ll ever need to add a pop or two into our daily wardrobes. Accessories are the easiest way to go about this, allowing you to resurface evergreen classics through a seasonal lens.
