A Coat for All Seasons

FEATURE: LONG READ
Words by ABIGAIL GURNEY-READ

If you’ve seen one coat you’ve seen them all, right? Wrong! As diverse as they are essential, coats hold the power to make or break an outfit. Fear not, though: these are the Autumn/Winter 2020 hero pieces that are worthy of investment.

The Camel Coat

To paraphrase Monty Python: what have the Italians ever done for us? Well, apart from the sanitation and the aqueduct, our Latin cousins are equally setting the standard in oh-so-refined camel coats. As classic as they come, exquisitely tailored versions by Brunello Cucinelli, for example, display the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Elsewhere, Wooyoungmi and JW Anderson employ directional nuances – from exaggerated lapels to a belted midriff – to elevate the scene.

The Trench

Burberry trench coats have been the lifeblood of British wardrobes since World War I, when the style was commissioned as part of military uniform. Its lightweight-yet-hardy cotton gabardine construction made for a supremely versatile layer – and to this day, the classic continues to do battle with unpredictable forecasts. As for AW20, the likes of Kenzo and Bottega Veneta create pieces that are just untraditional enough to feel dynamic.

The Tailored Coat

While 2020 might have seen you archive your three-piece suit, a tailored overcoat is – and will always be – an outerwear non-negotiable. Prime examples combine Savile Row savoir faire with an altogether more contemporary approach; Jil Sander, for one, eschews traditional lapels in favour of streamlined minimalism.

The Utility Coat

Practical and elevated all at once, the new season’s utility coat embodies a ‘be prepared’ mantra. Equipped with roomy pockets and useful fixtures, the style can run the gamut from lightweight field jackets to heftier winter iterations – all united by their ready-for-anything attitude.

The Puffer

One man’s down coat is another man’s puffer jacket. Despite their semantic differences, the two styles occupy one very common ground. Consider each to be the Swiss Army knife of outerwear, defined by a fastidious attention to performance and practicality. Down-filled quilting is the ultimate insulation against winter’s icy reception; and many of the leading brands, from Moncler to Rick Owens, utilise polyamide fabrics that are resistant to both wind and water. Jack Frost, do your worst.

The Leather Coat

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to don leather without looking like an extra in The Matrix. Leather jackets, traditionally, vary from classic bikers to shearling aviators; however, Bottega Veneta – among others this season – has heralded a new translation that’s decidedly more sporty. Call it neo-leather – as opposed to Neo leather, that is.
