The Swimwear Guide

Feature: Long Read
Words by Abigail Gurney-Read

Every body is a ‘summer body’ – celebrating yours starts with the right swimwear. Whether you’re looking to emphasise your figure’s positives, or enhance the areas you’re less than confident about, selection is everything. Fits, fabrics, expert advice; feel your very best on the beach, and wherever you’re soaking up the sun, with our essential guide to swimwear.

While some are born with gazelle-like limbs, the rest of us can lengthen our pins with a little help from swimwear. A loftier cut is your legs’ best friend, as Peony founder Becky Morton explains: “Designed to sit high on the hips and curve just under the belly button, our hi-line pant visually elongates the legs and creates a more flattering shape for the tummy. We cut and re-cut this style many times to create the perfect shape, giving it extra length in the legs.”

Elsewhere, new-to-Harrods brand Oséree and Hunza G’s bombshell designs harken to a 1980s blueprint – a look defined by soaring cuts and Brazilian silhouettes that would, ultimately, prove the shape of things to come.

Honing an hourglass needn’t mean sweating it out at the gym… Praise be! Accentuating your curves can simply be a matter of well-placed embellishment; a belt or tie-detail at the waist à la Lisa Marie Fernandez and PatBo instantly contours the figure, whittling the waistline and boosting proportions elsewhere.

It’s a balancing act, according to Heidi Gosman, co-founder of Heidi Klein. “Those with a pear shape can accentuate the bust with padded tops and frills, while a halter-neck top will provide support for a larger cup size. Tie-sides can complement hips, without adding bulk; meanwhile, a well-fitting one-piece will bring dimension.”

Patricia Bonaldi, PatBo founder

“I design with a woman’s body in mind; my hope is that every collection will empower. Your relationship with yourself is one of the most important in your life, and if my brand can build confidence for my customers, I could not be more proud.”

The Finer Details

More than what meets the eye – take note of the nuances that elevate this season’s luxury swimwear.

  • Tropical print material

    Print

From flashback fronds, care of Versace’s iconic jungle print – as worn by Jennifer Lopez – to PatBo’s paradisiacal palms, prints have taken on a distinctly tropical mood this season.

  • Orange crochet swimwear material

    Texture

Ruching here, crinkles there. ’Tis the season for texture, it would seem, and for Hunza G it’s a signature. Take note: textures will always draw focus, so wear them in areas you’re looking to emphasise.

  • Black velvet material

    Material

Sustainability has come to the fore – a priority of Becky Morton at Peony where, “100 per cent of swimwear is made from recycled content, even the inner linings.” Look out for ECONYL® and organic fibres.
