The Best Coats of AW21
Love them or hate them, colder climes are inevitable. Our philosophy? If you can’t beat them, lean in. Winter forecasts herald a welcome influx of sumptuous layering and coats galore – which, if you ask us, makes for ample reason to rejoice. Autumn/Winter 2021, we’ll see you now.
A perennial style icon, the classic trench coat is steeped in history. Burberry remains synonymous with the gabardine archetype, which traces its roots all the way back to the frontline of World War I. Kassl Editions also looks to uniforms for inspiration, referencing fishermen’s coats with practical silhouettes cut in water-repellent fabrics. By far the chicest way to style out a storm.
The Puffer Jacket
Puffer jackets are going nowhere for AW21. This season is a tale of two aesthetics. Emboldened prints – see Balmain’s new monogram – and muted minimalism. For the latter, Nanushka and Jil Sander are the cream of the crop, offering effortless neutrals that can be styled with anything come hurried winter mornings.
The Wrap Coat
Bringing new meaning to ‘wrapping up’ for autumn, the wrap coat is AW21’s most flattering outerwear proposition – a sleek antithesis to the season’s more XXL silhouettes. Simply belt it at the waist, and watch an hourglass appear. Max Mara’s iconic Madame is a classic, while new pieces by Loewe and Chloé are as sophisticated as they come.
The Tailored Coat
The Teddy Coat
The Leather Jacket
The perennial appeal of leather jackets knows no bounds – better yet, there’s a style to suit everyone. For those who prefer a less-is-more approach, AW21 welcomes a host of pared-back looks from the likes of Loewe and Theory. Meanwhile, biker jackets – dripping in zips, rivets and hardware – are enduringly cool.
