The Work-Play Wardrobe

FEATURE: LONG READ
Words by Joseph Bobowicz

Keeping busy? We thought so. Indeed, the modern man’s lifestyle is a balancing act. Between a time-testing career, sporting endeavours and a taste for life’s finer things, you might be wondering where finding the time to look great comes in. The short answer? It doesn’t. Enter: Harrods Menswear. Providing breadth, depth and convenience in an efficient and elevated shopping experience, our Second Floor’s curated layout makes it the ultimate one-stop destination, housing everything you’re into. To show you how easy it is, we invited someone just like you to test it out. As the saying goes: “If you want something done, ask a busy person”. Meet Tom Exton.

You might know Tom Exton – or ‘TGE’ as his moniker goes – for his YouTube vlogs, where he tests out the latest cars and showcases his watch collection. Or, perhaps, you know him as the co-founder of LDN Muscle, a bespoke fitness programme he runs with his twin brother. But Tom Exton also has a “day job” in finance. A multi-hyphenate and globetrotter in the truest sense, Exton flits between exclusive events, never in one time zone for long. One moment, he’s at the TAG Heuer X Porsche Formula E party in London, the next, he’s hot-desking in a Santorini villa. Only ever having a few hours to play with, he shops fast – doing so, without compromising on experience or style. For him, Harrods ticks all the right boxes. Here, he outlines why.

“Unlike many people who are keen on fashion, my relationship with clothes is swayed heavily by practicality”

3 Outfits to Do It All

“As much as I like looking good, I don’t love shopping for shopping’s sake. When I can block out a couple of hours, and, in that time, pick up my basics as well as some more statement pieces – plus skincare and grooming – that’s my ideal. That’s why Harrods Menswear is perfect for someone like me.”

“I’m used to operating at short notice. My plans tend to finalise themselves the day before they happen, but my average day can be typically segmented into three”

1. Work

“I wore a suit for work every day for the best part of 10 years. Now, it’s smart-casual at most. Formality has fallen out of favour. I go for clean and classic colours, and looser tailoring – nothing too restrictive. On foot, I’ll add some nice designer trainers, finish with a great watch, and off we go. It’s a formula that tends to cover most bases.”

2. Gym

“I don’t tend to go too bright or colourful at the gym. As my mum says, it’s not a fashion show. The important thing is comfort and performance – my workout is more about weights than it is cardio, so I don’t need full Lycra or anything too technical. Some people might call it ‘athleisure’.”

3. Events

“I live across a few different places, so I constantly need to think about what I have at the other end. When I’m away from my desk or at a daytime event, I’ll tend to dress more relaxed. Classic trousers – linen in summer, something a bit heavier in the winter – are essential. To push the boat out, I can add bolder pieces like a printed shirt.”
