When the cold weather hits, it’s easy to focus on plain practicalities: is this outfit warm enough? But there’s little pleasure to be found in a get-up that’s toasty but lacking in style. From robust knitwear to the smartest fabrics, here are three easy ways to elevate casual dressing this winter.
Knitwear, you might think, is obvious – but the story this year is predominantly one of size. While the first thing to consider is the quality of the yarn, the latest sweaters add volume and texture to all kinds of outfits. JW Anderson’s rollneck (pictured below) is knitted from an especially soft blend of alpaca and wool, and has a smooth leather pocket for eye-catching contrast. Elsewhere, based on a classic, Simone Rocha’s crew-neck has a sculptural knit inspired by traditional fisherman’s sweaters, designed to fend off the cold at sea.
Don’t think leather is just for your wallet and boots. Hard-wearing and superbly warm, leather is an ideal fabric for the winter months, and will only get better with age. When it comes to jackets, few items are as timeless as a black leather bomber or varsity. This one (pictured) from Jil Sander will layer nicely over a chunky rollneck or knitted polo, and can be worn with warm woollen trousers or jeans. For a sharp, confident look: a leather trench. Wear yours over a double-breasted blazer – as seen at Celine – or take note from Saint Laurent, where they were teamed with black tailored trousers and Chelsea boots.
If it’s been worn by Marlon Brando – On the Waterfront – or Robert Redford – Downhill Racer – there’s no going wrong with a bold shearling jacket. With a soft fleece lining and contrast collar, Brunello Cucinelli’s version is made from the finest cashmere in traditional tan, while Loewe’s draws on the brand’s famous leatherworking heritage, stretching back to 1846. And the options don’t stop there. Thom Browne and Marni have reversed the trend, crafting jackets with soft fleece exteriors – unexpected but impactful.
From fresh suiting to statement knits and cult pieces by Loewe, these are the trends and brands to pay attention to this season.Read & Shop
