History Of The Grotto

Since 1955, Father Christmas has visited Harrods every year to meet children from across the world. To this day, the Harrods Christmas Grotto holds a special place in the memories of everyone who comes to visit.

  • A 1950s Memory

For over 60 years, Harrods has been the home of Father Christmas in London, welcoming wide-eyed children to experience the magical festivities.

To celebrate his first visit, Father Christmas spoke to Harrods for a special interview in 1955, and revealed the secret behind Christmas:

“Christmas is for children, first and foremost. I help keep the spirit of Christmas alive, which is very important.”

While toys may have changed increasingly over the past 60 years, a meeting with Father Christmas is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
