The Harrods Safe Deposit

The Harrods Safe Deposit, Lower Ground Floor

The Harrods Safe Deposit department, which dates back to 1896, is the oldest and least-seen part of the store. Behind the Victorian three-ton steel entrance door lies state-of-the-art security surveillance equipment, including electric gates, solid steel walls and alarms.

Each customer decides their own personal password, which is known only by Harrods Safe Deposit personnel, the customer and anyone else they nominate to access their safe. There is one unique key to each safe, which remains in the customer's possession at all times.

All safes are double-locked by the Safe Deposit team to ensure maximum security of the contents. The alarm system in the Safe Deposit department goes through to the police, as well as the store's own 24-hour security network.

From The Harrods Archive

  • Safe-Keeping Since 1896

"A curious thing about this wondrous [Safe] Deposit," reads The Harrodian Gazette of December 1921 "is that jewellery and precious stones stored there retain their lustre, absolutely unimpaired and indefinitely; even silver does not tarnish, thanks to the evenness of temperature and dryness of the atmosphere."
