Bunny Business: An Interview With Director Will Gluck & Actor Domhnall Gleeson

Domnhall and Will at Harrods

The American writer, director and producer Will Gluck and actor Domhnall Gleeson who plays Peter's nemesis, Mr. McGregor, and is best known for his roles in Star Wars and Harry Potter – share how they brought the mischievous world of Peter Rabbit™ to the modern day screen...

WG: My parents read the Peter Rabbit stories to me when I was a kid so, like most people, I felt very nostalgic about the tales.

I also read them to my kids when they were younger, and they really liked them. I did a bit of research before I started the movie and, interestingly, it seems that everyone knows about them, but not many people say they remember the actual storylines. So that gives you a bit of creative licence.

DG: The film introduced me to the Peter Rabbit stories.

I didn’t really read the books growing up, so I went back and read them. I was attracted to the film because I wanted to try something different, and the script was very funny. It was an opportunity to work with Will [Gluck] and Rose [Byrne], which was exciting.

WG: Shooting with CGI and live action was very difficult.

You basically have to make two movies. First, you have to shoot the live-action movie with the actors, and then you go back and shoot and direct another one with the animals in it. We were constantly redoing the animation, much to everyone’s chagrin, because we wanted to make it the best it could be, and there was always something that could be tweaked or changed. That was the bit that took forever. The hardest part for the actors, however, was having to interact with characters who weren’t actually there. Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson pulled off the quite crazy feat of reacting to invisible animals admirably.

WG: Filming in Harrods was amazing.

When we were scouting the building, we got a real behind-the-scenes look at how it all works, which was fascinating. And being able to shoot all night, when the store was closed, was pretty great too. We felt like kids in a candy store. What could be better than being locked in Harrods for a couple of nights?

DG: I normally feel weird looking at things in expensive shops, as someone inevitably asks how they can help you; but we were left totally alone, so I could gawp all I liked. Also, there were rumours that there was a really amazing diamond in the safe that night, so I spent a lot of time imagining stealing it.
