10 of the Best: Spa at Home

EDIT
Words by KATIE SERVICE

For many of us, the past year has meant our bathrooms have taken on a whole new meaning, and for editorial beauty director Katie Service, her at-home space is no different. While we can't visit a spa, we've brought the spa home – and here are ten products Katie's loving for her own slice of zen.

Roll With It

Aromatherapy is a big part of my life, I pick up little glass vials of essential oils from all over the world and now have quite a collection at home. This CBD, Camomile and Lavender infused rollerball from OTO is super easy to use, I roll over pulse points on my wrists at the end of a working day as it helps to transition my mind from office space to bed space so I don’t go to sleep buzzing.

The ‘Never Leave Me’ Face Cream

When it comes to being confined in the house, there is one prospect that does make me anxious and that is running out of the Decorté AQ Meliority Cream! Created by Japanese brand Decorté, I apply a generous dollop of it to my neck twice a day and massage in until it’s all absorbs (a good 30 seconds). I’m also stockpiling La Mer’s Moisturising Cream, which I lavishly use on the backs of my hands.

De-Stress in the Shower

Did you know that you hold huge amounts of tension in your scalp? I am addicted to the cathartic act of massaging away my worries with this Japanese tool, Uka Soft Kenzan Scalp Brush. Just 30 seconds of circular motion on a wet head before my Aveda Rosemary & Mint Purifying Shampoo helps to loosen dead skin and build up, encourages better circulation and improves hair growth. It’s a wonderful bliss-out ritual since, in aromatherapy, rosemary is an anxiety antidote.

Morning Blend

Every morning for me begins with a cup of Harrods English Breakfast Tea – whether I’m at home in my kitchen, on a red eye from New York or up early on a film set – you cannot beat it. At home I am very specific about drinking it from a very thin rimmed mug, with just a splash of milk and a teaspoon of brown sugar. I’ll often pull my tarot for the day ahead while I sip it!

Candle Calm

Candles are amazing for so many reasons – they bring calm, their scent alters your mood and they allow you to tap into your inner interiors geek. Roja Dove's Roja Parfums Rose de Mai candle is my all-time favourite (I even had lots of them light up my winter wedding reception) because in just a few minutes the scent fills my entire flat. It’s truly transformative and smells like South of France summer in a jar.

Back to Basics

WFH means my make-up regime has minimised. Video conferencing requires a focus on doing the basics really well – no one wants to look like they have gone all out for their Google Hangout with Janet from accounts. I’m swapping my lipstick for full and glossy brows thanks to the incredible Anastasia Beverley Hills Mini DipBrow Gel. It gives amazing volume and structure to my face.

Desk Essential

Move over stapler and Dyson desk fan, my WFH gadget in residence is this genius Riki Skinny Vanity mirror. The iPhone attachment and Bluetooth function means that I can film make-up tutorials easily at my home desk and the inbuilt lights in the mirror give the most perfect glow to even the peakiest-looking skin – there is even a magnifying mirror for fiddly bits like eyeliner flicks.

Wash Hands but Make It Fashion

I collect beautiful soaps anyway but recently, for obvious reasons, I have been charging through them. Using a soap bar instead of liquid soap means there’s less plastic that ends up in land fill and Gucci’s trio of Bloom-scented soaps dials up my bathroom sink game. I have also discovered a hand sanitiser that doesn’t dry my skin – Aesop’s Resurrection Rinse Free – it smells gorgeous and is the perfect desk accessory.

Bedtime Buddies

Every night before bed I’m taking Biobees Royal Jelly, which is an amazing source of multivitamins, plus Perricone MD’s Omega 3, known to be a good mood regulator. I have also been popping 5 drops of CBD oil under my tongue to help quieten my busy mind allowing me to drift off more easily. My rule is, after I have taken it, my phone needs to be off – no social media and no emails.

Needs Must…

Self-isolation has challenged me to pick up a few new skills – having to forgo weekly maintenance appointments at the Harrods Hair & Beauty Salon has encouraged me to teach myself how to do an at-home manicure and pedicure properly. Taking advice from Margaret Dabbs, I am giving myself dry manicures (water soaks risk you damaging skin) with this Czech & Speake gold-plated manicure set.
