Like Off-White? Meet 3 Virgil Abloh-Approved Designers

Feature: Long Read
Words by Abigail Gurney-Read

“The first creative gesture was always skateboarding and graffiti,” said Virgil Abloh in an interview with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. He should know.

Blessed with an eye for concept and creative opportunity, the Off-White founder and creative director – and artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear since 2018 – has racked up critically acclaimed runway collections, cult high-street capsules and collaborations that blur the lines between fashion, music and art. And it doesn’t stop there.

Heron Preston

Shaping the present, driving the future; amid Heron Preston’s current and new-season collections, you’ll find graphic T-shirts and sweatshirts crafted in organic cotton – its mission statement: to minimise the impact on nature and promote biodiversity – as well as recycled GORE-TEX-treated suits and separates that rewrite the rulebook of traditional tailoring.

Fear of God

For designer Jerry Lorenzo, Fear of God is more than clothing. It’s an idea; a philosophy. Lorenzo’s drive has long been to subvert what is meant by designer clothing versus ‘streetwear’ – to exist outside of either label, and create long-lasting pieces that are a category unto themselves. Expect a casual wardrobe of exceptional quality that transcends time and trend.

“At home, my luxury is family and spiritual time. Connecting with my family and faith gives my work foundation and perspective.”

A-Cold-Wall*

It’s no surprise that Samuel Ross of A-Cold-Wall* is a design master, given he was mentored by Virgil Abloh – the Off-White founder discovered Ross’ work on Instagram, and hired him as an intern in 2012. Fast forward to today, and A-Cold-Wall* collections are complex and multi-layered, imbued with Ross’ tailoring expertise and love of experimentation.
